The first in my series of christmascards. The theme is the life of the Nisses in December
A nisse is the Danish and Norwegian version of the Kobold in Germany, the Brownie in Scotland and the Tomte in Sweden. He is related to the roman Lar, who was the household guardian. The nisse has always lived on the farms, and it's said that a farm would never do well, if it hasn't got a nisse. The nisse is the protector of the house, but he likes to tease, and if the people of the farm forget him or otherwise misbehave he will punish them, at worst he will burn the farm down. In return for his help around the farm he is rewarded with a big bowl of porridge or risengroed in Danish (rice pudding)
The nisse is a fast runner, incredibly strong and in some cases he can take the shape of an animal. He varies in height, but most are about 30 cm.
It's believed that the nisse is a middle-aged, pipe-smoking, bachelor, living alone, that isn't true, in many cases he has a wife and a lot of children, but humans seldom see them.
